Commenting on today’s announcement of the extension of supplementary funding for Maintained Nursery Schools (MNS) through to summer 2021, Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

“The NEU is pleased to hear the government has finally committed £23 million supplementary funding for Maintained Nursery Schools for summer term 2021.  Whilst this is hugely valued and will allow for settings to continue to provide an excellent education for their pupils, long-term funding arrangements for the sector need to be secured as a matter of urgency.

“It is not appropriate for our Maintained Nursery Schools to survive hand to mouth when their role in the education of young minds has lifelong benefits.

A long-term funding solution for Maintained Nursery Schools needs to be a priority for the government.”
