Speaking about the Welsh Government’s announcement to ensure social distancing in the workplace, David Evans, Wales secretary for the National Education Union Cymru, said:
“NEU Cymru welcomes the Welsh Government plans to ensure social distancing in the workplace. These are challenging times, and it is right that we try and keep those in work as safe as possible.
“We would agree with the guidance that it is going to be very difficult to conform to social distancing in schools. But we would urge our members to stick as closely as possible to the 2-metre rule where practicable. It will be difficult, but ultimately, we need to ensure educators and learners are as safe as possible, and of course we should continue to ensure that as few students and staff as possible are in school.
“We know working with vulnerable learners, and children with special needs in some instances, will make social distancing very difficult, as the Welsh Government point out. We do hope, that as the closing of schools now progresses, that those critical workers in education settings will be able to benefit from PPE and testing, where appropriate.”
