Welcoming extra money from the Education Minister for mental health services, David Evans, Wales secretary for the National Education Union Cymru, said:

“NEU Cymru welcomes extra money for mental health services for children and young people this year. The £1.25 million for school counselling services, including remote sessions, will be invaluable to support the anticipated increase in need for mental health services as a result of social distancing and school shut down measures.

We know that children and young people will be worried at the moment, and agree physical and mental health are really important at this time.

“The Minister is right to say that schools will be shut for a significant period. It would be useful to know how long Welsh Government anticipates this to be the case, though we do appreciate that she says she won’t open schools until it is safe to do so.”
