"Speaking about the Education Minister's announcement not to set a date for opening schools and colleges, David Evans, Wales secretary for the National Education Union Cymru said:

"Like everyone, we want learners to be back in their classrooms. But not until it is safe to do so."

"We're pleased the Education Minister has published her "Decision framework for the next phase of education and childcare", prioritising again the safety and wellbeing of staff and students alike. We welcome again that she has chosen not to set a date for re-opening - we agree a date at this time is arbitrary.

"We know there will be children with difficult home circumstances, and limited access to learning and outside space.

"But, whilst it would seem fewer children get very ill, nothing would be more distressing for learners than seeing their teacher, parents or other important adults get poorly. We also note that there is an increasing number of children and young people with severe symptoms from the virus.

“We look forward to examining the document in more detail.“
