Sunday 18th August, 2019

The content below is from the Regional Office.

As you know, our region’s rich heritage of protest and struggle is being celebrated and commemorated in 2019.  The People’s History Museum, University of Manchester, Manchester City Council and other community and cultural organisations are collaborating to host a range of events over the summer which focus of the bicentenary of the massacre at St Peter’s Fields, an event better known as “Peterloo”.  The union, along with the TUC and other affiliated unions, will contribute to the programme in recognition of the significance of the leap forward for democracy and civil rights which those events acted as a catalyst for and we have already provided sponsorship to the programme of events.

On Sunday 18th August, the Greater Manchester County Association of Trades Councils have organised a march and rally to ensure that the voice of organised workers is heard on the closest weekend to the anniversary of the actual massacre (15 August 1819).  Details as below:

11.30am       Assemble at Whitworth Park (M14 4PW)

12.00pm       March to Albert Square

1.00pm         Rally and speeches

The NEU Regional Council have considered it agreed to support this event under the banner of “Protest, Education, Democracy” and we will be present with significant amounts of promotional material including the NEU inflatable orb, national banner, large and small flags and other promotional items.  Whilst recognising that the event falls in the summer holidays we are appealing to local Districts to mobilise members for what is expected to be a large, vibrant community event.

If you would like to join us, please email anne.morgan@neu.org.uk or text 07821 804555.

Hope to see you there!
