NEU elections - use your vote!

Important elections are taking place to help decide the makeup of the member groups that lead the National Education Union.

Elections for the Treasurer, Membership & Equality OfficerNational Appeals and National Disciplinary Committees have now taken place. You can view the reults below. 

Elections will be taking place later this year, for electoral district seats, three equality seats and three sector seats. Nominations for these seats open in July - see information about eligibility.

Election of Officers - Treasurer and Membership & Equality Officer - Results

For the period 1 January 2019 – 31 August 2020

The treasurer of the union plays a vital role in relation to the best use of the NEU resources, including your subscriptions and is responsible to the executive and Conference for the overall administration of the union’s finances. The membership and equality officer has an overview of and contributes to the unions recruitment and equalities strategies.

Election of National Appeals Committee and National Disciplinary Committee
For the period 1 January 2019 – 31 August 2023

The role of the National Disciplinary and National Appeals Committee is to hear any cases of discipline of members of the union and hear any appeals arising from any decisions of a disciplinary committee.

Members in each of the seventeen Executive Districts of the NEU will elect a member to form the panel of seventeen members who are eligible to serve on the National Disciplinary or National Appeals Committee (it is not possible to serve on or be nominated for both).

The districts not listed below have returned candidates unopposed. Voting in the elections for National Disciplinary and National Appeals Committee closed at midday Wednesday, 11 July 2018. Read the full Scrutineer Report and a list of elected members.

There are no results shown for District 4 as the election in that district has been declared null and void – details of the re-running of this election will follow.

Election of Electoral Districts, Three Equality Seats and Three Sector Seats

Any current member who has been with ATL or NUT for three years or more is eligible for nomination for an 'electoral district member seat' (other than non-paying students, associate members or those who have retired). Nominations for these seats open in July and you'll need the backing of at least one association or branch.

Three seats have also been set aside for members from under-represented communities and with protected characteristics, specifically our black, disabled and LGBT+ members. You'll need to update your details with the union before 14 July to be eligible to seek a nomination from at least one association or branch.

There are also three sector specific seats for independent workplaces, post-16 establishments and support staff. Nominations open in July and you'll need the backing of at least one association or branch. 

Timetable:

  • Closing date for receipt of nominations – Friday 28 September 2018
  • Closing date for receipt of withdrawals – Friday 5 October 2018
  • Closing date for receipt of statements/photos – Friday 5 October 2018
  • Dispatch of ballot papers to members eligible to vote – Wednesday 7 November 2018
  • Ballot papers to be returned to Independent Scrutineer – Wednesday 28 November 2018 (midday)

Am I eligible to vote?

​In order to vote in any National Education Union election, you need to be in full membership of the NEU on the date on which voting papers are despatched by the independent scrutineer. This information is highlighted in the sections on each election, below.

Non-paying student members, associate members or those who have retired are NOT eligible to vote.


Am I eligible to be nominated?

Nominations have closed for the treasurer, membership and equalities and NAC/NDC elections.
