  • Are pay arrangements in the school transparent? (Do staff know where they fit in to the pay structure? Does the school publish its pay structure and pay policy, making them available to staff?)
  • Does the school’s pay policy commit the school to pay progression as the norm for all eligible staff, in line with the NEU pay policy checklist
  • Is the school’s pay policy in line with other key points of good practice in the NEU checklist, e.g. pay portability, fair and transparent objectives, no requirement to undertake additional responsibilities without appropriate TLRs, direct employment of supply teachers avoiding supply agencies where possible, clear appeals procedures?
  • Does the school use the recommended pay scale points and values set out in the joint advice from NEU, NASUWT, NAHT, ASCL and Voice?
  • Does the school review its pay policy with union reps on an annual basis and does pay policy feature as an item in the regular negotiation meetings between the head and union reps?
  • Does the school actively monitor pay outcomes by equality strand, share results with union reps and include staff / reps in analysis of trends?
  • Is the Teacher Governor included in discussions on the school’s pay policy?
  • Do pay appeal procedures in the school meet the provisions of the procedure at Appendix 2 of the NEU model pay policy, allowing teachers to seek a review of any decision that affects their pay?
