“Pressure from the NEU and others forced Damian Hinds to announce additional funding for teachers’ pay in the summer, but for the first time in 27 years the Government has ignored the advice of the School Teachers Review Body – and neither implemented their recommendations in full, nor funded them.
“The Government is only funding increases above 1%, claiming schools will have already budgeted for that amount. Schools will therefore have to make yet more cuts elsewhere in the budget. This will inevitably have a negative impact on children and young people’s education.
“To make matters worse, the grants to schools will be based on pupil numbers so many schools will not get even this. The Government should base the grants on teacher numbers and require schools to use the money for pay increases.
“The NEU has launched a high-profile campaign to fight for full funding and full implementation of the STRB recommendations on pay, following Damian Hinds’ unprecedented decision by to cut the value of the pay award recommended by the STRB. At a time of serious and deepening teacher recruitment and retention problems, the Government needs to begin to restore the cuts in the real value of teacher pay.”
