Pay negotiations

The NEU and other FE unions met the Association of Colleges on 13 December to consider our pay claim. The AoC offered a pay increase of 1%, or £250 (whichever was the greater) and this was not accepted by the unions.

Further Education England Joint Trade Unions Claim 2021/22

The main elements of our claim are:

  • A significant increase in pay that moves to restore the 35% loss in real pay for all FE staff since 2009 and moves to close the £9,000 average pay gap between school teachers and FE lecturers.
  • For the living wage, calculated by the Living Wage Foundation, to be the minimum wage in the sector, with all further education colleges in England becoming accredited living wage employers with the Foundation.
  • A review of the 2009 National Agreement on Regulating Working Hours in Further Education Colleges with a view to establishing a National Workload Agreement for all FE Staff. The agreement to take into account the impact on workload of changes in working practices since 2009 and those related to Covid-19.

The negotiations will start on 13 December 2021.

Trade Union Side Pay Claim 2020/21

The joint unions have tabled their intent to put in a pay claim for 2020/21 on 15 September to the AoC. NEU wants to secure a pay increase that makes a significant contribution to restoring the real-terms pay losses suffered by members in the sector and that reflects their key role in education including tackling the COVID-19 crisis.

The trade union side pay claim for 2020-21 is:

  • A significant move towards the full restoration of college pay levels to where they would be had college pay kept pace with inflation since 2009.
  • For the living wage, calculated by the Living Wage Foundation, to be the minimum wage in the sector, with all further education colleges in England becoming accredited living wage employers with the Foundation.
  • For all contracted-out services to be brought back in-house with improvements in terms and conditions equal to those already directly employed by the college.
