Engaging and motivating all children to read and write for pleasure in EY and KS1

A session with practical strategies to help engage and motivate children to read and write for pleasure. 
 

Motivating children to choose to read and write for pleasure is key to enhancing their reading and writing skills, cognitive development, and wellbeing. Using research, we will consider how practitioners can make small, meaningful changes to practice - incorporating multimodal and playful approaches - that support all children, including those with EAL and SEN, to:

• Engage confidently in informal book talk
• Engage in choice-led reading and writing at school
• Express preferences for authors and materials
• Choose to write about their interests and for real life purposes

Suitable for: Early years and KS1

Helen is a senior lecturer in education, and co-director of the Centre for Literacy and Social Justice at The Open University. Helen draws on her first career as a teacher and teacher trainer, specialising in early years and primary English. Her recent research focuses on early career teachers and reading, informal book talk in the early years, and reading and writing for pleasure programmes.

Samantha is a researcher and former early years and key stage 1. Based at the University of Cambridge, Samantha’s research remains classroom focused. Her PhD research involved working in reception classrooms, setting up and initiating playful activities for children after shared readings. She also works with the Open University on a range of literacy projects.
