With over 4.3 million children, or 9 in an average classroom of 30, growing up in poverty, understanding how this impacts on children’s experience at school is essential for all Early Career Teachers and trainees.
Exploring school through the eyes of a child growing up in a lower-income household, this session will explore the practical steps any new teacher can incorporate to be more poverty aware and develop inclusive practices. In this session we’ll delve into what we know about the realities of poverty for children and young people. We’ll also look at how everyday classroom practices and routines can be established to ensure that unintentional stigma or barriers can be avoided. This really practical session will include lots of top tips and takeaways including examples from schools that you can put straight to use in your practice.
By the end of the session, you will:
- Understand the current context in relation to child poverty.
- Understand the hidden everyday barriers that pupils from low-income households can experience at school.
- Have practical ideas and resources to be more poverty aware in your own day-to-day classroom practice.
