Historically, 'doing' reading comprehension has involved reading a text and answering a series of questions. But what do we do with these ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ answers? How do they inform the next steps in learning? And why do we treat the text being used as somehow neutral?
This session will use examples from classrooms to explore how teachers can:
- Help children to question texts in different ways, e.g. through reasoning and speculating
- Use evidence from focused ‘reader response’ activities to inform future planning
- Consider issues of equity in assessing reading comprehension. Regardless of their complexity, all texts are culturally located. By analysing some texts, attendees will consider the potential impact of this on children’s understanding
Suitable for: All primary, particularly KS2
(This session will be recorded and available for 14 days. If you are unable to attend at this time, sign up to receive the recording link. This will be sent the day after the webinar.)
