As negotiated by NEU and teacher unions (NITC) all teachers should have Directed Time Budget - until individual time budgets are in place, no teacher should be directed to work more than 32.4 hours in a single week, and each working day is deemed as 6.5 hours and deducted from the 1265 annual hours maximum.
Directed Time has not been removed or suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.
NEU are working towards time budgets being fully implemented for all teachers in good time for September 2021 for the new academic year – until then the rules on Directed Time continue to apply.
School Principals are responsible for determining a time budget for each member of the teaching staff, giving due regard to the individual responsibilities of each teacher.
The principal should seek to agree with the teacher the range of activities/duties which that teacher will undertake and the amount of time which that teacher will spend on each of these.
The time budget should be distributed prior to the commencement of the teaching year.
Planning, preparation and assessment time
Time for a teacher to plan, prepare or assess, should be included in the directed time budget. TNC 2020/01 provides for a minimum of 10% of directed time towards PPA time.
This time is ‘ring- fenced’ and cannot be used for cover or other duties.
An annual schedule of meetings should be provided in advance of the academic year. Meetings for all staff, including those with teaching allowances, will be accommodated within directed time budgets.
